The Saskatoon Blades were wheeling and dealing Thursday on WHL draft day.
The Blades made four trades, picking up an additional three 2022 draft picks. Saskatoon ended up with 12 selections in the lottery.
In the first round (21st overall), the Blades chose 15-year-old defenceman Isaac Poll, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound product of White City.
In 26 games with the Prairie Storm U15 AA squad last season, Poll had 10 goals and 38 points.
Saskatoon had two picks in the second round.
With the 35th overall selection, the Blades took Hudson Kibblewhite, a 5-foot-10, 143-pound centre. The 14-year-old product of Vernon, B.C., had 19 goals and 61 points in 30 games with the Rink Hockey Academy U15 Prep team last season.
With the 41st overall pick, Saskatoon took defenceman Jordan Martin, a 6-foot-0, 181-pounder out of Abbotsford, B.C. The 15-year-old put up seven goals and 28 assists with the Yale Hockey Academy U15 Prep team in the 2021-22 campaign.
In the third round (62nd overall), Saskatoon selected Lochlan Tetarenko, a 14-year-old from Bragg Creek, Alta. The 5-foot-8, 143-pound right-winger had 26 goals and 50 points with the Okotoks Oilers U15 AAA team.
Defenceman Brayden Klimpke, 14, was selected in the fourth round (70th overall). The 5-foot-4, 116-pound defenceman from Calgary had 17 assists in 29 games last season with the Northern Alberta Xtreme U15 Prep team.
Two picks later — a selection the Blades got after trading 20-year-old forward Noah Boyko to the Prince George Cougars — Saskatoon took 14-year-old centre Maxx Hamelin from Winnipeg. The 5-foot-7, 136-pounder recorded 48 goals and 44 assists in 32 games last season with the Winnipeg Bruins Gold U15 AAA squad.
In the sixth round (129th overall), the Blades selected centre Rylan Hue, a 5-foot-10, 155-pounder out of Saskatoon. The 15-year-old recorded 31 goals and 18 assists last season with the Saskatoon Bandits U15 AA team.
The Blades’ seventh-round selection (137th overall) was 14-year-old defenceman Dayton Deschamps. The 5-foot-7, 135-pound product of Saskatoon played last season with the Saskatoon Outlaws U15 AA team and had nine goals and 22 assists.
Twelve picks later, Saskatoon took 15-year-old right-winger Tyler Deakos. A 5-foot-9, 140-pounder from Cochrane, Alta., Deakos had eight goals and 10 assists last season with the Edge School U15 Prep squad.
In the eighth round (167th overall), the Blades drafted Hudson Roberge, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound defenceman from West Kelowna, B.C. The 15-year-old put up two goals and eight assists in 10 games with the Okanagan Hockey Academy U15 Prep program.
Goalie Malakai Swiers, 14, was Saskatoon’s 10th-round selection (211th overall). The 6-foot-1, 161-pounder from Lloydminster, Alta., went 10-8-0 with a .916 save percentage with the Lloydminster Bobcats U15 AAA team.
The Blades’ final selection was forward Colten Worthington, who went in the 11th round (233rd overall). The 14-year-old forward had 27 goals and 35 assists in 32 games last season with his hometown Brandon Wheat Kings U15 AAA team.
There were 50 players from Saskatchewan selected in the draft, with 13 from Saskatoon, eight from Regina, two each from Humboldt, Martensville, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Tisdale, Warman and Whitewood, and one each from Annaheim, Balgonie, Chaplin, Clavet, Corman Park, Eastend, Edam, Gull Lake, Langenburg, Macklin, Milestone, Pilot Butte, Waldheim, White City and Wilcox.
Three Saskatchewan players — Macklin’s Cole Reschny (third overall, Victoria Royals), Whitewood’s Reese Hamilton (fourth overall, Calgary Hitmen) and Saskatoon’s Lee Shurgot (ninth overall, Prince George Cougars) — went in the top 10.
