Even after spike belts took out both front tires on their vehicle, five people tried to get away from Saskatoon police late Thursday night.
According to police, officers saw a vehicle just before midnight that they thought was stolen. They tried to stop it near the intersection of 22nd Street West and Witney Avenue, but it took off north on Idylwyld Drive.
Spike belts at Marquis Drive took out the vehicle’s front tires, but it kept going on Highway 12 towards Martensville.
The vehicle stopped just short of Township Road 380 and Tactical Support Unit officers joined other officers to perform a high-risk vehicle stop. After about half an hour, five people got out of the vehicle and were arrested.
A loaded rifle was found when the vehicle was searched.
A 45-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving, evading police, prohibited operation of a vehicle, breach of conditions and seven gun-related charges. Four women are facing gun charges.
