Saskatoon Police Chief Troy Cooper said Thursday the man who allegedly pointed a gun at police near Confederation Mall on Saturday has been taken into custody.
Cooper told Gormley that Rolfe Reuben Herman had been arrested overnight.
Herman was wanted by police on a number of charges, including aggravated assault and forcible confinement.
In a media release later Thursday, police said officers went to a house in the 3200 block of 33rd Street on Wednesday just before 7 p.m. They saw Herman leave the house and were able to take him into custody.
“Upon his arrest, the man appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound,” the police release said. “The 32-year-old man was transported to hospital for treatment for the non-life-threatening injury before being released into police custody.”
Police didn’t say if Herman suffered the gunshot wound Saturday when a police officer fired their weapon in Herman’s direction.
That incident started just after 4 p.m., when members of the Guns and Gangs Unit saw a man wanted on warrants get into a cab in the 3200 block of 33rd Street.
After officers stopped the cab, the suspect got out of the backseat and allegedly pointed a gun in the direction of police officers. That prompted one of the officers to fire their gun.
The suspect ran into a mall in the 300 block of Confederation Drive, leading to a police operation in the neighbourhood. The man wasn’t located.
Then, on Monday at about 10:30 p.m., officers tried to stop a vehicle in the area of Eighth Street East and Grosvenor Avenue because they thought Herman was inside.
The driver took off, colliding with a post at St. Henry Avenue and Ruth Street East. The driver ran off and police couldn’t find him.
The release said the police had requested the Saskatchewan government appoint independent investigators to ensure transparency in the incident.
