A 35-year-old man who was shot by a Saskatoon police officer on Wednesday made his first court appearance Friday.
The man is facing two counts each of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and carrying a concealed weapon, and one count each of pointing a firearm and breach of probation.
After his first appearance, he was remanded into custody and is to return to court March 10.
According to a media release issued by police after the incident, officers responded Wednesday at around 11:30 a.m., to a call about a fight at a home on Avenue L South.
Police said one of the men involved in the altercation took off on foot, armed with a handgun and a machete.
Officers found the man a short time later and, after a confrontation on Avenue U South, several shots were fired by police. The release said the suspect received a non-life-threatening wound.
Police Chief Troy Cooper confirmed Thursday that one officer fired his gun “several times” at the man, who was taken to hospital for treatment. The man was released from hospital into police custody.
The Regina Police Service is investigating the shooting.
