Anyone who’s interested in trying ice fishing can do so without a licence this long weekend.
The province is allowing people to fish for free, as it always does once in the summer and once in the winter.
It’s something Jason Matity is stoked about.
He’s the man behind getfishing.ca, a Saskatchewan website with instructional videos, photos and discussion on fishing.
In an interview on The Greg Morgan Morning Show, Matity said ice fishing does a world of good for him, and he hopes more people will give it a shot.
And it’s more than just catching a tasty meal.
“The thing that I think a lot of us don’t probably appreciate enough is what it does for our mental health. This is why I fish and ice fish. You see and hear nature. You feel that fresh air getting into your body,” he said.
While he loves fishing in the summer, there’s something about doing it on a frozen lake.
“So much of what we do at this time of year, we’re stuck inside. Getting out, I just feel so great. And I’ll tell you, I sleep like the dead after all of that fresh air,” he said with a chuckle.
But still it can be very cold hanging out on a frozen lake in Saskatchewan winter weather. How does Matity convince people to brave that?
“We’ve brought the comforts of home to the ice,” he said. “We’ve got portable tents, we’ve got portable heaters (and) underwater cameras. We can actually be comfortable on a day on the ice when it’s very, very cold out. And the clothing itself has been revolutionary, in terms of the bibs, the coats and the gloves and all of those things.”
Free fishing weekend runs from Saturday through Monday.
