The Saskatoon Police Service is advising people that an old scam is making the rounds again.
In a media release Friday, police said they have received reports about the “family emergency scam” being used.
That’s when someone claiming to be a family member in distress calls a potential victim and asks for money for bail or to pay hospital bills. The caller tells the victim to withdraw cash and use a courier company to send the money to an out-of-province address.
“The victim may also be directed to other people claiming to be a police officer, a lawyer, a bail officer or some other authority,” the police said in the release. “The SPS will never make requests of this kind.”
Anyone who gets a call like that is urged to ask the caller questions to verify their identity, or to ask for a phone number to call the “relative” back after checking their story with other relatives.
Police said people who suspect fraud should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or, if they’ve been victimized, to call the Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300.
