Canada won its first two medals at the Beijing Winter Olympics on Saturday, but one wasn’t the colour many expected.
Defending Olympic champion and top qualifier Mikael Kingsbury of Deux-Montagnes, Que., was upset by Sweden’s Walter Wallberg in the men’s moguls final.
Kingsbury, who won gold in Pyeongchang in 2018 and silver in Sochi in 2014, finished first in qualifying in China with a score that was more than two points better than his closest competitor.
In Saturday’s final, Wallberg posted a score of 83.23 points on his final run to better Kingsbury’s score of 82.18.
Canada’s other medal Saturday — its first of the Games — came from long-track speed skater Isabelle Weidemann of Ottawa, who won bronze in the women’s 3,000 metres.
Valerie Maltais of Chicoutimi, Que., was 12th, with Ottawa’s Ivanie Blondin 14th.

The Canadians lost 6-2 to Sweden’s Almida De Val and Oskar Eriksson, then stole five points over the final three ends to beat Vicky Persinger and Christopher Plys of the United States 7-2.
Canada and Great Britain are tied for third in the round-robin standings behind Sweden (5-2) and Italy (6-0).
Morris and Homan are to face the Czech Republic, Australia and Italy on Sunday to complete the round-robin. Semifinals are set for Monday, with medal games slated for Tuesday.
Snowboarding: Laurie Blouin (Quebec City) finished seventh in qualifying in the women’s slopestyle event and moved on to the final.
