The world’s number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, the Australian government, along with border officials, embarrassed themselves over the last two weeks.
No one wins in this saga of egos.
Djokovic knew what he was walking into or was just too arrogant or ignorant to have everything in order before he arrived in one of the most Covid-strict places on earth.
If you take your profession seriously you don’t have some questionable reasoning to be given exemptions for a country as locked down as Australia is.
And for the Australians to not have their stuff in order in the appeal process so that they had to do the deportation court case twice to make sure their own ducks in a row was just as bad.
What we got was an unnecessary drama. The government and the tournament directors should have been clear, and all of this stuff should have been figured out weeks ago.
It felt like Djokovic was looking for a fight and the government wanted to use Djokovic as a political tennis ball.
Eventually, it was the country that could declare game, set, match.
