Penny Barker and her Moose Jaw rink have claimed Saskatchewan’s top women’s curling prize.
Skipped by Barker, lead Danielle Sicinski, second Jenna Enge and third Christie Gamble defeated the Chelsey Carey rink 7-5 on Sunday in Assiniboia.
Barker’s team had lost twice to Carey earlier in the tournament — 6-4 in the A-side final and 10-9 in the 1 vs. 2 page playoff.
The 36-year-old and her rink curl out of the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.
Barker’s rink built up a 5-2 lead over their opponents in the first five ends of the final. Carey’s rink pulled within a point heading into the eighth end but the Moose Jaw club was able to score two in the end, only gave up one in ninth, and then ran the other team out of rocks.
Carey’s rink was undefeated coming into the finals.
In the semi-finals, Barker beat Amber Holland’s rink 4-3 to get to the third showdown with Carey.
It is the second time Barker has won the tournament, winning it in 2017 for the first time.
Barker and her rink will represent Saskatchewan at the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Thunder Bay. That tournament will run from Jan. 28 to Feb. 6.
