Going to the Olympics no longer makes sense for the NHL.
As badly as we all want to see McDavid and Crosby and Matthews and Ovechkin going head to head for gold, COVID has stolen the show again.
Keep in mind there are coaches and managers who believe if their stars go, they’ll view it as a selfish move.
With a bunch of games now postponed this week, the NHL will need to make them up sometime and I don’t know how you do that plus work in a three-week break in the middle.
The NHL Players’ Association will meet with the league to figure out the next best steps with different protocols, but the first priority is to get a full NHL season in.
The Olympics is now an afterthought. And the other side of the issue is should the NHL be bending over backwards to appease a shrinking group of interested players to go to a Games that have become as political and controversial as these Olympics have become?
No. There will be other Games and thankfully McDavid and MacKinnon are young enough that we’ll see them play for gold eventually.
