The odds of NHL players heading to Beijing for the Olympics are dropping by the day as cases of COVID-19 increase.
The latest information the players have received is that strict protocols are in place for those heading to China and if one of the players tests positive or is deemed a high-risk close contact, they could be spending a lot more time in China than originally thought.
Players aren’t happy to hear they could be watching their NHL teams slump without them if they’re stuck in China. The other factor is how much trust they’d have with Chinese authorities determining when they’re cleared to return with the recent diplomatic boycott announced by Canada and U.S. governments.
The players really want to win a gold medal for their country. But the biggest prize in hockey is still the Stanley Cup, and Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby and others will have a hard time sacrificing potential team success for individual desire to play in the Olympics.
If players said they’re not going, I won’t blame them, although selfishly I really hope we get to see McDavid and Crosby play together for Canada.
