The need for 650 CKOM’s Adopt-A-Family program continues to grow.
“We hit a record high last year because of COVID and we’re still in COVID,” the Salvation Army’s Judy Regamey said during Friday’s Brent Loucks Show.
“We’re still trying to reach out to families that maybe haven’t needed some help, but we want to help them if they need the help.”
650 CKOM created the Adopt-A-Family program in 1988. With the help of the Salvation Army, businesses, groups, families and individuals are matched with less-fortunate families in Saskatoon that are experiencing tough times.
Registration began Friday and runs until Dec. 2.
Donations of cash are accepted, or people can shop for Christmas gifts and food items for families.
Sponsors are to drop off their donations at TCU Place on Dec. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Family Pickup Day set for Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Last year, donations and donations in kind last year totalled $190,000 last year. Some 960 families and 2,200 children were helped through the program.
Loucks asked Regamey if people are getting more comfortable registering for the program.
“There’s no shame in it,” she replied. “Sometimes we all need a little help. We’re trying to make it as simple as possible so people can get the help they need.”
