As quickly as they arrived, they were gone.
Chamber of commerce offices across Saskatchewan saw long lineups on Tuesday as families, students and business owners snapped up free rapid antigen self-test kits.
“Swift Current ran out of their allocation in 45 minutes,” Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce CEO Steve McLellan said Wednesday.
“People want these kits; they are anxious to get them. It gives them a sense of comfort that they got them in their hands.”
This week, 18 chambers of commerce and several businesses began distributing the kits to help curb infections.
The Saskatchewan chamber initially offered its distribution network to the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) in the spring, but it wasn’t until the fall the SHA reconsidered the offer.
“No question we want business to be back to normal and in order (for that to happen), we need to make sure everyone is comfortable,” said McLellan.
“What these rapid tests do is provide that level of comfort (and) that sense of screening that gives (people) the ability to go out and about a bit more than they may normally.”
The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce also ran out of kits after handing out more than 3,300 on the first day.
McLellan said the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce is working on restocking those offices.
