The 22nd annual C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research is set for Thursday.
The live event, which is to run on C95 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., raises funds for the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan to support breast cancer research.
“The need for further research and new treatments is extremely important,” Nora Yeates, the CEO for the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan, said in a media release.
“More funds for research mean progress towards ending breast cancer, and longer, healthier lives for the ones we love. It’s the research for new treatments that is keeping our mothers, sisters and aunts — those who are affected by breast cancer — alive.”
Breast cancer is the most-diagnosed cancer in women. It’s estimated that more than 740 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Saskatchewan this year.
The five-year survival rate for Canadian women diagnosed with breast cancer is 88 per cent, an increase from 55 per cent in the early 1990s. These improvement is linked to cancer research.
In 2019-20, the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency did 35,600 mammograms to screen for breast cancer. Of the cases of breast cancer detected, 75 per cent were diagnosed at an early stage.
The C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research has raised more than $5 million for breast cancer research since its inception, with all of the proceeds raised staying in Saskatchewan.
