The arrival of a baby bison this week was a surprise for staff at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
“It’s rare bison can give birth this late in the season. In fact this is so late that we are already well into rutting season,” the park wrote in a Facebook post.
“This little heifer has some catching up to do with her big sisters as they have grown quite a bit since they arrived in May. She is very strong and has a very attentive mom, so we’re certain she will be just fine.”
The baby, born on Sunday, is the third calf this year to join the herd, which is now 18 strong.
Bison were reintroduced to Wanuskewin almost two years ago. The herd, which started at 11, is expected to reach 50 within three years.
The public can view the baby calf from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.
