“RIP my tiny buga baby.”
In a Facebook post, Rochelle Dubois says she is completely traumatized by the death of her daughter on Thursday.
Dubois was at work when she received a call that her oldest daughter, Baeleigh Maurice, was in hospital after being struck by a truck while riding her scooter. She died just 17 days before her 10th birthday.
In a news release, Saskatoon police said the collision happened around 9 a.m. while she was crossing a busy section of 33rd Street West.
“Just to be clear, my child died while crossing a clearly marked crosswalk,” Dubois wrote, to dispel misinformation circulating on social media.
A memorial of flowers and pictures quickly grew following the accident and a GoFundMe had raised more than $9,000 as of Friday morning to help the single mother of two with funeral expenses.
A candlelight vigil in Baeleigh’s honour is also planned for 7:30 p.m. at Avenue G and 33rd Street.
