I hope Canada has fallen in love with Leylah Annie Fernandez as much as New York has.
The high-energy teenager fist pumps, celebrates and revs up the crowd with the best of them, and is into the final of the U.S. Open. This comes just two years after another 19-year old Canadian, Bianca Andreescu, beat the best ever, Serena Williams, in the final.
And Fernandez may not be the only Canadian in a final with Felix Auger-Aliassime on the men’s side. Gaby Dabrowski could also be in the women’s doubles final. Should we add, Fernandez will play Canadian-born Emma Raducanu in the final? The 18-year-old British phenom moved overseas at the age of two.
We thought Genie Bouchard and Milos Raonic were the best it’ll ever be for Canadian tennis.
Now, we have Fernandez, Andreescu, Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov. And the oldest of that quartet is Shapovalov at the age of 22.
There could be a decade more of this but let’s enjoy the now.
And let’s enjoy the energy Fernandez has put into the tournament as these Canadians have turned the U.S. Open into the Canadian Open.
