Masks will be mandatory in common areas of Saskatchewan long-term care homes starting Friday.
On Thursday, the Saskatchewan Health Authority announced it would require family members of residents and visitors to wear masks outside of residents’ rooms in hopes of minimizing the risk of COVID-19 in the facilities.
Those who live in the homes won’t be required to wear masks outside of their rooms, but the SHA said they’re “strongly encouraged” to do so — particularly if they’re not fully vaccinated.
The new guidelines will be in place in long-term care homes operated by the SHA and by its affiliates. The rules also will apply to vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
“While it is not required, the SHA also strongly recommends that family and visitors wear a mask within the resident’s individual room,” the authority said in its announcement. “This will provide additional protection for all our residents during this fourth wave facing our province.”
Medical-grade masks are available for free at screening stations that are set up at the entrances to long-term care homes.
Everyone who visits a care home will have to undergo health screening and perform hand hygiene before they enter. The SHA also will offer rapid antigen tests — with results available in 15 minutes — and will continue to recommend physical distancing.
