2 men arrested after police, SWAT called for robbery

Regina police are laying charges after having to take an unusual step to apprehend several robbery suspects, using tear gas to smoke them out of a home Saturday afternoon. 

The incident began earlier in the morning, when police received a call at 5 a.m. from a man who said he had been beaten up and robbed on Rae Street between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue.

Police said a witness tip of a gun being used in the robbery, along with a risk assessment, led them to call in the SWAT team and crisis negotiators to the street where the suspects had gone into a home.

Four people exited the house and were taken into custody without issue, but four others refused.

Police said they deployed tear gas after several hours of negotiation to get the remaining men out of the home.

A pellet gun was found inside.

A 29-year-old Regina man and a 25-year-old Fort Qu’Appelle man were arrested and charged with break and enter and commit robbery.

They appeared in Provincial Court on Monday morning.

Two men and two women were also arrested on unrelated charges.
