While those in the Nye household were questioning my life decisions by waking up at 2 a.m. to watch Canada take on the U.S. in Olympic soccer, I’m glad I did.
It goes down as a monster win for a women’s program that seems to be so close yet so far away from winning one of the major two events: the Olympics and World Cup.
Of course, the 2012 Olympics in London had the country suddenly becoming huge women’s soccer fans, especially when officiating in the semi-final against the Americans drew the ire of a nation.
Christine Sinclair has become as recognizable a sports figure in Canada as Hayley Wickenheiser.
So when the Canadian goal went in at around 3:30 a.m. to make it one-nil, there was an inaudible yelp from my couch.
And now, another test against Sweden and a much bigger celebration for gold.
But as grateful as I was that I watched a historic win live, I’m equally grateful the gold medal game is at a much more reasonable hour on Thursday night.
