Two people from Calgary are facing multiple charges after RCMP officers seized 742 grams of fentanyl during a traffic stop that included a scuffle with the police.
On Monday around 11 a.m., Saskatchewan RCMP Roving Traffic Unit officers stopped a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway near Swift Current.
During the stop, the man who had been driving the vehicle refused to comply with the officers’ demands. After a struggle — which resulted in two officers and the driver suffering injuries — the driver was arrested.
The passenger, a woman, took off in the vehicle.
With the help of the Swift Current Police Dog Services and Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers, police later found the vehicle near Swift Current and arrested the woman.
After she was arrested, the woman was assessed by a drug recognition expert after officers saw signs of impairment.
A search of the vehicle found 742 grams of fentanyl, a quantity of illicit tobacco products and a small amount of cocaine.
The 28-year-old man has been charged with 10 offences, including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and drug trafficking.
The 42-year-old woman is facing eight charges, including impaired driving, resisting arrest and drug trafficking.
They appeared in court Wednesday and will remain in custody until their next court appearance.
