Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa needs to re-retire.
He is all that is wrong with baseball as a 76-year-old manager who holds on to the old school rules. You don’t flip bats or celebrate too much or, like Monday night, you don’t swing for a home run on a 3-0 count when you’re up 11 runs.
But Tony La Russa must have forgotten which team he’s managing because he clearly doesn’t care much for his own players.
First La Russa said that Yermin Mercedes made a mistake and will face discipline internally for hitting a 3-0 pitch to the moon while the Sox were beating the Twins 15-4.
Then last night, La Russa said he didn’t have a problem with how the Twins handled themselves when they threw behind Mercedes.
Mercedes’ teammates had his back. Too bad their manager is still living in the 1980s.
But to call your own player “clueless” is a sign La Russa made the right decision to leave the game 10 years ago.
