Saskatoon police are investigating whether an off-duty officer went to last weekend’s children’s “freedom rally” at Saskatoon’s Kiwanis Park.
650 CKOM requested an interview with Saskatoon Police Chief Troy Cooper and was told he was not available. Instead, a statement was provided.
It reads in full: “The evidence of all participation at last weekend’s event is still being reviewed. This review includes a report that an off duty officer may have been present. The officer has not been to work since the event, and any steps we take as an employer will depend on the result of our Public Health and Police Act investigation. The member has been asked to take steps to ensure the safety for both our organization and the community during the investigation. All citizens are expected to follow the guidelines and restrictions of the Public Health Order.”
It’s not clear how long the investigation may take, how long the officer will remain off duty, whether the officer could be disciplined, and, if so, what form any discipline could take.
650 CKOM has also contacted the Saskatoon Police Association and requested information, but has not yet received a reply.
Since the rally, SPS has handed out tickets to “11 key participants,” and has suggested that charges may be laid against some of those participants in the future.
The event, which had around 120 attendees, advertised balloon animals, face painting and a fishing pond.
Mayor Charlie Clark urged residents not to go to the rally, calling it “irresponsible and dangerous.”
