The number of COVID-19 patients in Saskatchewan hospitals has fallen to its lowest level this month.
According to the Ministry of Health, there are 188 people hospitalized due to the virus in the province. That’s a decrease of 15 from Wednesday and the lowest mark since the Saskatchewan Health Authority reported April 1 there had been a discrepancy in previously reported numbers.
The ministry also reported there were 293 new COVID cases in the province, along with 282 newly identified cases of COVID variants of concern. There also were 223 recoveries and two more deaths announced.
A person in their 70s from the Regina zone and an individual in the 80-and-over age group from the southeast zone are the latest fatalities due to the virus. To date, 460 Saskatchewan residents have died after contracting COVID.
A look at the numbers
The hospitalizations include 147 people receiving inpatient care, with 73 of those in the Regina region and 40 in the Saskatoon area.
There are 41 people in intensive care, with 27 in the Regina zone, nine in the Saskatoon area, two in the central-east region and one in each of the north-central, southwest and south-central areas.
The new cases reported Thursday were in the Regina (87), Saskatoon (74), northwest (24), southeast (24), central-east (22), central-west (15), far northwest (eight), north-central (eight), northeast (five), southwest (four) and south-central (four) zones.
The hometowns of 18 cases are still being determined.
Seven cases that were tested out of province have been added to the Saskatchewan total and one out-of-province resident has been removed. The total to date now stands at 37,384.
So far, 4,183 cases of variants of concern have been identified by screening in the province.
The Regina region has recorded 2,673 of those, with the southeast (398), Saskatoon (372) and south-central (342) zones also reporting more than 300 cases.
There were 141 new variant cases reported in the Regina region on Thursday, with Saskatoon’s total increasing by 44.
So far, 34,325 recoveries have been reported in the province. As of Thursday, 2,599 cases are considered active, with 953 of those in the Regina region and 515 in the Saskatoon area.
The seven-day average of daily new cases is 284, or 23.2 per 100,000 population.
The 3,573 COVID-19 tests done in Saskatchewan on Wednesday increased the total so far to 717,486.
Vaccination update
There were 7,956 more doses of COVID-19 vaccine given in Saskatchewan, bringing the provincial total to date to 315,405.
Regina (2,777), Saskatoon (1,888), central-east (715), northwest (619), southeast (420), south-central (389), north-central (224), far northwest (220), central-west (146), far northeast (134), southwest (116), northeast (39) and far north-central (two) zones.
There were 267 doses administered to people whose zone of residence is pending.
