The Canadian Football League is reportedly heading back to the federal government with hat in hand again to see if the Liberal government will give the league some cash.
If you remember a little less than a year ago, CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie fumbled the ball in his pitch to the finance committee. It may have been the lowest point of the last year, unless you consider working with the XFL a step below that.
At least the commissioner will know what’s coming in the line of questioning if there is a similar presentation that needs to be made.
However, fans and media and definitely the Canadian Football League Players’ Association have piqued interest when the reports indicate the CFL would have to open its books to the government.
The fact is there is mistrust that the owners are losing as much money as they’re letting on. And I’ll note, I’m talking pre-pandemic here.
But at least if the league goes this far, we might finally get to know how a league with a quarter of a billion dollars in annual revenues can be losing so much money.
