Three people from Ontario are facing charges after the RCMP seized nearly two tons of illegal marijuana during a traffic stop last week.
The Mounties said a Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officer pulled over a truck for a commercial vehicle safety inspection Wednesday near Caronport on the Trans-Canada Highway.
During the stop, the officer determined the truck driver was in possession of illegal cannabis and arrested him.
The officer also saw another vehicle that was constantly driving near the truck. The officer contacted the Moose Jaw RCMP, which pulled over the second vehicle.
The driver and passenger of that vehicle had in their possession a significant amount of Canadian cash and they too were arrested.
After executing warrants, the Mounties found nearly 4,000 pounds of illegal marijuana in the truck and a large cache of cash in the passenger vehicle.
The RCMP said the truck driver and the driver and passenger of the car know each other.
The suspects all live in Brampton, Ont. They’re scheduled to appear in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday.
“While cannabis has been legalized in Canada, it is important to know that not all cannabis is legal,” Cpl. Lana Garvie, the RCMP’s Prairie Region Cannabis Co-ordinator, said in a media release.
“Cannabis from a licensed store is legal and safe because the cultivation and sale is regulated by Health Canada. Unregulated cannabis is grown in unknown conditions, using unknown pesticides, and could have several harmful drugs added which can be very dangerous to the consumer.
“Seizures such as this are important to keep unregulated cannabis out of our communities.”
