Speed limits could be changing on residential streets in Saskatoon.
The city is launching an online review about lowering the speed limit to improve safety in residential, school and playground areas.
In a news release, the city noted vehicle speeds on residential streets and pedestrian safety are the top concerns among residents who have participated in neighbourhood traffic reviews over the past eight years.
The review will consider speed limit reductions in residential areas from 50 kilometres per hour to either 40 km/h or 30 km/h. The review is also examining possible changes to speed limits in school zones, playground zones, and areas with a high number of seniors.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Many cities across Canada, and the world, have successfully implemented reduced speed limits in their jurisdictions,” said Jay Magus, transportation director for the city.
“Before making any changes, we want to inform, educate, and get meaningful feedback from citizens in order to make the right decisions with the right outcomes.”
Between March 2 and April 30, residents can provide feedback online and by taking the survey.
Comments will also be received by email at speedlimitreview@saskatoon.ca. The survey will also be conducted by telephone using a random sampling method.
