Richelle Schill found something unexpected when she was renovating her kitchen in Balcarres last week.
When she tore out her cupboards, Schill found an unopened letter sent more than 50 years ago.
The letter, with a date stamp of 1967 and bearing a cancelled three-cent stamp, was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Morton of Balcarres.
She put a post on social media asking if anyone knew the people to whom the letter was addressed.
“I put it out on Facebook because it seemed interesting and I wasn’t really expecting it to have such a response,” Schill said. “I’ve had a whole bunch of people private message me. I’ve had family members in the area call me.”
The people to whom the letter was addressed have since passed away, but Schill was able to find a daughter of theirs who lives in Saskatoon. Schill is in the process of getting the mail to the daughter.
She said she will never underestimate the power of social media and it was nice to be part of something positive online.
“You see a lot of negative on there and how it gets passed around,” she said. “It was nice to have such a positive response.
“I haven’t even had time to reply to all the comments. But I do really appreciate how positive everybody was. It did actually lighten the mood a bit. There’s been a lot of stress lately.”
