For the second time since November, the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) declared the outbreak Sunday, according to executive director Laurie O’Connor.
“They’ll monitor the situation with us for the next month or so and continue to support us through making decisions around that,” she told 650 CKOM Sunday.
The outbreak was declared following two positive cases to staff members. Saturday, a third positive case was found in another staff member, O’Connor said, leading to some changes in programming.
“Just to be extra-cautious, we’re going to close the emergency food hamper program tomorrow (Monday) and make sure staff get tested throughout the core staff and figure out if we’ve got any folks who might be positive. We’ve been chatting with staff through the weekend, to see if anyone has symptoms. The folks who tested positive are doing OK and we’re doing everything we can to support them through the illness,” she explained.
O’Connor said there isn’t any worry about the safety of those using its services at this time, keying on its safety protocols through the pandemic.
“We have some great cleaning protocols in place. Perhaps, we’ll have to look at those happening more frequently…it might be difficult for us to increase that, more than it is,” she explained.
“We have lots of barriers up in place and we only let a few in the client area at a time. We know that we’re keeping the proper distance.”
Its first outbreak included three staff members testing positive, as well. O’Connor said the outbreak was lifted in early-January.
She said the public has been great to deal with through the pandemic, offering them support when called upon.
“The public has been so supportive, of course, throughout the entire pandemic. And we do feel that support at this time,” O’Connor said.
In a press release Sunday, the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre said it will provide timely updates on its ongoing situation, along with its programming.
