Residents at Luther Special Care Home in Saskatoon have received their first dose of the Pfizer COVID vaccine.
A COVID outbreak was declared at the facility on Nov. 17, 2020. Nine people who tested positive there died and 26 staff members contracted COVID.
All residents in the affected unit and staff were deemed recovered on Dec. 20.
“We couldn’t be happier that the residents of Luther Special Care Home are one of the first long term care homes in Saskatoon to receive the vaccine,” Operations Lead Ivan Olfert said in a media release.
Residents are scheduled to receive their second dose after a 21-day period.
Olfert said this is a big step forward in protecting residents and staff from COVID but they aren’t letting their guard down just yet.
“We must continue to be diligent as other measures such as physical distancing, good hand hygiene and wearing of masks continues to be required to prevent transmission,” he explained.
