A 27-year-old man who was shot by a Saskatoon police officer on Dec. 23 has been charged in connection with the incident.
On Tuesday, members of the Regina Police Service’s Major Crime Section charged the man with two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.
The incident happened two days before Christmas at an apartment in the 1100 block of Avenue W North. Just before 6 p.m., Saskatoon police officers responded to a report of a domestic altercation that involved a man with a knife.
According to police, the man’s struggle with officers spilled out into the building’s parking lot, where the man was shot by a police officer.
The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Regina Police Service looked into the incident and, on Tuesday, arrested the man.
“The Regina Police Service investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting itself, which included the suspect’s actions, the officers’ perceptions, and their use of force,” the Regina police said in a media release. “While this entire investigation remains ongoing, it has led to the arrest of the 27 year-old Saskatoon man.”
Saskatoon police say the individual was in possession of a weapon at the time of his arrest, leading to two other weapons charges. Those aren’t connected to the incident in December.
The man was to appear in court by video on Wednesday. The investigation is continuing.
