The Grosvenor Park Canada Post office in Saskatoon is normally very busy, but it’s even more so just before the holidays.
Even though deadlines for regular delivery of regional and national parcels and letters to arrive by Christmas Day have passed, Friday is the cutoff for local deliveries.
If you’re in need of books of stamps for your Christmas cards or letters, you’re out of luck. It’s the same if you head to the post office looking for a variety of envelopes, packing tape, bubble wrap or other supplies usually in stock.
A sign posted on the Plexiglas barrier reads: “Attention post office customers. Due to a delay in the delivery of our postage stamp order, we are currently out of Canadian stamps. Quantities of U.S. and international stamps are limited. We currently do not have word on when more will arrive.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and are working to remedy this.”
What the sign does not specify is that people can still send single letters, but quantities of single stamps are limited.
According to one Canada Post employee, the shortages are widespread in Saskatchewan, and have been for the last week. A large shipment of supplies has been delayed in Montreal, but a reason for the delay was not provided.
According to a recent Canada Post news release, the federal Crown corporation has seen unprecedented demand this year for processing and delivering packages.
On-time delivery guarantees have been suspended since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
650 CKOM reached out to Canada Post for additional comment. An interview request was declined, but a statement was provided.
“Postal outlets have experienced unprecedented sales growth on stamps, supplies and shipping services this holiday season, as many Canadians are mailing gifts and holiday cards to loved ones that they may have visited in person in previous years,” the statement said.
“In addition, all post offices are seeing increased volume from small- and medium-sized businesses, therefore in some locations there may be a shortage of some items … Replacement orders have been placed, shipped and will be arriving as soon as possible at postal outlets across the country.”
