As the NFL hits the midway point of its season, there are two races to watch.
One is for the Super Bowl. The other is for someone you should start to get to know if you don’t already: Trevor Lawrence.
The Clemson Tigers quarterback is the top prospect for the NFL draft.
Of course, the team with the greatest chance at the first pick overall are the 0-8 New York Jets. The Jets are bad and have been terrible for a long time.
Some believe Lawrence should go back to school for one more year and avoid the Jets. One problem: The Jets are likely to be just as bad next year.
So what’s his next move? He could pull an Eli Manning or Eric Lindros and demand a trade.
It’s interesting how those two were labelled as extremely selfish, but 20 and 30 years removed from those deals, sports as a whole has become more selfish.
The players are gaining more power and that’s not a bad thing. But Baker Mayfield went to the Cleveland Browns. Joe Burrow didn’t ask to avoid the Cincinnati Bengals. And it’s unlikely Lawrence will try to avoid the Jets, but I’m not sure I’d blame him if he did.
