Residents at Saskatoon’s long-term care homes may be feeling a bit of deja vu, as visitor restrictions were strengthened Wednesday.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has enacted new visitor restrictions, due to the number of increasing COVID-19 cases in Saskatoon. An exception is made for compassionate care.
Eric Anderson is the communications leader at Sherbrooke Community Centre and Central Haven Special Care Home.
“Each resident has two designated indoor visitors that can come, and see them. For the next two weeks, that will not be happening,” he explained.
“Everyone is sad about the situation, but they’re also understanding as well.”
Anderson said restrictions will be re-evaluated by the SHA on Nov. 3.
“We were talking as a managers group… we’re basically going back to where we were, back in April and May,” Anderson explained. “(It feels) a bit like deja vu, but at the same time too, it’s something that we experienced already.”
Anderson said residents were really enjoying having visitors in the building and stressed how meaningful those visits were.
“Those visits really mean a lot… we were averaging about 500 residents visits per week at Sherbrooke. So it works out to about 70 indoor visits a day,” he said.
During Anderson’s Wednesday interview with 650 CKOM, he also had a message for the Saskatoon community.
“What happens out in the community really does impact us in long-term care homes… remain diligent with your handwashing, and keep in your social bubbles. Wear your masks when you’re out and about,” he said. “What happens out in the community has an impact on long-term care homes and we’re seeing that today.”
The new rules are in effect at all SHA facilities and affiliates. Those permitted into the facilities must undergo a health screening prior to entering.
