Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe joined Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark to speak about a $35.5 million funding announcement for the city.
The money is part of Saskatchewan’s Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP).
There is $150 million from MEEP that will be available to communities throughout the province, with the official announcement happening in May.
Program funding must be used by municipalities by March 31, 2022.
“We want to have companies move here, we want to have the kids growing up here feel proud of the city,” said Clark. “It starts with making sure residents are confident with our infrastructure.”
The majority of the money will be used for infrastructure projects around the city, totalling $27-million-dollars.
In total there will be around 170 km of roadway repairs throughout the city.
There will also be money made available for neighbourhood traffic safety upgrades, roadside safety improvements, sidewalk rehabilitation and a downtown festival site.
“As you drive around the city you will see our roadways are getting better and better,” said Clark. “People were embarrassed to come to Saskatoon because of our infrastructure. We need a city that people will be proud of.”
Moe spoke about the impact of COVID-19 on the province, adding that the MEEP funding will provide a stimulus for local economies throughout the province.
“This is federal funding that the premiers’ negotiated for,” said Moe. “I acknowledge the response to COVID-19 hasn’t been perfect every day over the course of the last six months, there really isn’t a playbook for a situation like this.”
Moe added that 4700 jobs have been added throughout the province in August, as well as Sask. having the lowest unemployment rate (7.9%) in comparison to the other provinces.
“We need to be accountable with the investments we are making, better days are ahead for our province.”
MEEP is part of Saskatchewan’s $7.5 billion, two-year capital plan to stimulate its economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
