Frost-covered lawns and windshields greeted people across the province Tuesday as temperatures dipped below the freezing mark.
Environment Canada says 20 communities set cold temperature records overnight.
Saskatoon hit -6.9 C overnight, beating the previous record of -1.1 C set in 1917. It was a chilly night in Regina as well. The mercury in the Queen City fell to-4.5 C which broke the 1898 record of -3.3 C.
Coronach was the provincial cold spot at -8.4 C.
Meteorologist Mike Russo said the frost arrived early this year.
“We obviously have years where we see cooler temperatures, but getting below zero, I think it’s a tad on the early side,” he said. “Temperatures are going to be starting to rebound back to near seasonal values, if not above seasonal for this time of year.”
Russo said we should be able to leave our plants uncovered tonight, adding the highest risk of frost will be areas along the U.S. border.
