A dedicated Mental Health Intensive Care Room will be established at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon, thanks to a donation from the Sobey Foundation and Sobeys Inc.
According to the foundation, the room will be located in the hospital’s Emergency Department and will be used as a safe space for children and youth experiencing acute mental health crises.
It’s not clear whether additional, dedicated mental health professionals will staff the room, when it will be available for use, or how much money is going into it.
Sobey’s CFO Michel Vels says it’s an ongoing commitment – and the Sobey Foundation has invested a “substantial” amount of money into this project, along with 12 others at Children’s Hospitals across Canada.
Other projects include research aimed at understanding pediatric mental health and improving and creating more effective therapies at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and a new Urgent Telemental Health Service for children and adolescents in rural Manitoba.
