Virgil Reed, founder and CEO of Reed Security, told 650 CKOM taking precautions like cancelling newspaper subscription, having someone check on the house and setting timers for lights are all helpful ways to protect homes.
Reed said he finds more people are turning towards new smart home technology for added security.
“People still want to feel safe, but there’s actually quite a few people that want to be connected to their homes,” Reed said.
Reed said his company’s most popular product at the moment is a Wi-Fi doorbell camera.
“It actually records everybody who’s coming up to the door, so whether they press the button or not – it has a built in motion sensor,” Reed said.
The doorbell camera also sends a 30-second video every time it senses movement to an app called Alarm.com, which can be downloaded onto a smart phone. It even allows the user to talk to someone at their front door through the camera in real time.
“(It) makes sure that everybody knows that it’s a live person that you are chatting to,” Reed said. “It’s a huge deterrent when you start asking questions to the person who’s at the front door.”
The Alarm.com app can also control the security system or smart locks, smart lights and a smart thermostat.
Reed said most basic security packages the company sells now come with a flood sensor placed at the lowest level in a house. It detects if there is an increase in moisture and sends a notification to the numbers on the contact list.
