Fireworks sales are shooting up.
More people are buying fireworks compared to previous years, according to the stores we talked to.
Wouw Chen, manager of the Pelican Market, is trying to keep up with the demand.
“We already sold out of about half of the fireworks we ordered for Canada day,” said Chen. “It’s much better than previous years. I probably ordered twice as many this year.”
With mass fireworks displays being cancelled this year, people are taking it into their own hands.
According to Jarret Weisbrad, manager of Bazaar and Novelty, more people are purchasing fireworks compared to previous years.
“Definetly a lot more customers this year, I think with COVID you’re still able to enjoy fireworks from your car, or with your family. You’re still able to enjoy them,” said Weisbrad. “We have been very busy.”
Things to know before you light your fireworks
The Saskatoon Fire Dept. is reminding everyone who plans to set-off fireworks that low-hazard fireworks can only be set-off on private property between the hours of dusk and 11 p.m.
Low-hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use and include roman candles and sparklers, among others, and travel less than 50 metres (160 feet) high.
High-hazard fireworks are designed for professionals and can only be purchased by persons holding a valid Fireworks Supervisor – Level I or Level II card issued by Natural Resources Canada.
In a release, the fire department says to ensure your location is free of overhead obstructions, is clear side-to-side and is a safe distance from combustible materials, and to keep in mind that you are solely responsible for any debris that may land on your spectators or another person’s property.
It is recommended you wait at least 30 minutes before beginning the clean-up process after your fireworks display. It is also recommended that you dispose of used fireworks in a pail of water.
Currently, there is no fire ban in effect for the City of Saskatoon. Residents and visitors in surrounding communities should consult their local rural municipality for information specific to their area.
If fireworks aren’t your thing, there will be plenty of virtual activities and programs going on around the country this Canada Day.
