The Saskatoon Fire Department estimates about 60 people have been left without a home after a fire ravaged an apartment block in College Park East on Sunday night.
No humans were injured in the blaze in the 100 block of Edinburgh Place, but firefighters found two animals that had died — a cat and one large dog. Both were discovered in the unit where the fire began. One cat had been found alive on a second-floor unit and rescued by fire crews.
At around 7:49 p.m. Sunday night, firefighters responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a fire at the apartment building.
The fire department says there was visible smoke and flame when they arrived on scene.
All the occupants of the building had already self-evacuated when fire crews arrived.
The building has been deemed uninhabitable until remediation occurs, and damage has been estimated at $600,000.
A fire investigator has confirmed the blaze to be accidental, but an exact cause will not be available.
A fire inspector will continue to work with the property owner to monitor the progress of repairs.
