All bets are off for the 2020 season of thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs.
On its website, Marquis Downs says the decision was made with the safety of both staff and patrons in mind amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
An earlier announcement indicated the first part of the season would be cancelled up until July.
“This is the first time we are seeing anything like this,” said race manager Rick Fior. “We have missed nights due to rain or weather, but never anything like this before.”
The racetrack opened at Prairieland Park in 1969 and had never missed an entire season up to now.
The release goes on to say that most of the jockeys who race at Marquis Downs come from Trinidad or Jamaica, which leaves the Marquis season at the mercy of the travel ban during the pandemic.
It says the trainers also need time to get the thoroughbreds race-ready. With the limitations currently in place for travel and public gatherings, a race season is just not feasible this year.
