On March 11, it stopped.
Yes, we’ve been without basketball, hockey, baseball and now football for three months due to COVID-19.
Today also marks what was to be opening day of the CFL regular season, the opener between the B.C. Lions and Edmonton Eskimos.
And it’s OK to admit it: The last three months have sucked for so many more reasons than just not having sports. But it hasn’t helped.
It’s our distraction. It’s our escape. And sports fans haven’t had the thrill of a buzzer-beater, lengthy playoff overtime or dramatic final drive.
Today we should be talking about the Stanley Cup final and the NBA final. We should be discussing which CFL team has to get off to the best start, and if coaching changes in B.C., Toronto or Ottawa will actually make those squads playoff teams — and if Cody Fajardo will take off in Year 2 with new offensive co-ordinator Jason Maas.
But no, we wait. And it’ll likely be another month or so before sports fans get some sort of normalcy back. And we can just hope that includes the CFL.
