The Tampa Bay Lightning was one of two teams to vote no on the NHL’s proposed 24-team return-to-play plan for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
And the main reason has to do with Tampa’s nightmare from last year. The team clinched the first seed in the playoffs with almost a month left in the regular season and then was upended by the hardened Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round.
Tampa Bay hasn’t been the only top team to coast to the playoffs only to get upended by the eighth seed.
Now Tampa, once again a top team, isn’t fond that its first-round opponent will get a best-of-five play-in series before it plays the Lightning.
We thank Tampa’s player rep, Alex Killorn, for at least being up front and honest about it.
It is a reasonable concern — one, I’m sure, the other seven teams are thinking about as well.
For the fans, however, this format could lead to some dramatic upsets in Round 1. For the losers, I’m sure the excuses will come easy and be plentiful. Tampa Bay players clearly are preparing theirs.
