The Queen City Marathon is going online for 2020.
Run Regina — the organization that puts on the annual race — announced in a media release Wednesday the marathon will be a virtual race this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“We are disappointed that we will not be able to host an in-person event in September this year,” Run Regina executive director Shawn Weimer said in the release. “However, we are excited about the chance to do something special to keep our runners and walkers active and moving.”
More details about the virtual marathon will be revealed at a later date. The 3,000 or so people who have registered to date — and those who sign up in the future — will be able to earn their medals and T-shirts by completing their run or walk anytime during the month of September.
“The ongoing COVID-19 situation has forced us to reinvent our event this year,” Weimer said. “We know people have been training all year to run or walk the GMS Queen City Marathon and for many families it is an annual tradition.
“This virtual format allows us to still provide an opportunity for our participants to accomplish their goals and to celebrate their achievements.”
Registrations for the virtual version of the marathon are being accepted at the marathon’s website.
