$20M hospice campaign complete with $1M gift

St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation has raised almost $21 million dollars for its Close to Home Campaign for Hospice and End-of-Life-Care.  The campaign received a boost of $1 million the Yuel family –  Jim, Lisa, Neli and Taya – on Tuesday.

“As a family we have had occasion to spend time at the Palliative Care Unit in St. Paul’s Hospital,” said Jim Yuel. “The service there is fantastic, and the attention to the patients is unbelievable. However, for patients who might need a longer time in care at end-of-life, a facility like the Hospice at Glengarda would be wonderful. We are very pleased to contribute to that success.”

“Not only helped reach our $20 million goal, it actually helped us surpass our goal to the point of $20,954,000 raised,” said Lecina Hicke, CEO of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation.

Hicke says a hospice setting provides comfort, care and attention to patients and their families.

“As they face some of the most challenging times in their life, which is saying good-bye to the people that they love,” she said.  “What a hospice does is it allows people to live, until they die.”

The Hospice at Glengarda, located at 301 Hilliard Street in Saskatoon, will be the province’s first free-standing residential hospice.

The 15-bed facilty is expected to open later this year.
