On Thursday a GoFundMe campaign with a $15,000 goal launched to help get food and supplies to people in La Loche.
By Friday night, overwhelming support allowed organizers to dream bigger — doubling their goal to $30,000.
Dr. Kendra Morrow partnered with the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the Student Medical Society of Saskatchewan on the project.
“I think it just really speaks to the people of Saskatchewan and how we really are all in this together,” she said Saturday. “We just really hope we can reach as many families as possible in La Loche and surrounding area if our funds permit that.”
Volunteers are already shopping for goods to keep people busy at home, fed and have the cleaning supplies and hygiene items they need.
The first delivery is scheduled to arrive in La Loche on either May 15th or 16th.
Morrow explains because of generous donations they may schedule more trips or expand to other northern communities.
“We’re kind of working out those logistics as we speak,” she said. “We’ll have the first delivery next week and we’ll take it from there.”
The north and far north regions are experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak, which is centered in La Loche.
