The City of Saskatoon has some advice to keep residents ready for any scenario to mark Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada.
Pamela Goulden-McLeod, the city’s director of emergency planning, joined The Brent Loucks Show to share some tips. Her No. 1 recommendation is to keep a survival kit ready at all times.
“You want two litres of water per day per person. You want some food that won’t spoil, like canned food, energy bars, those kind of things. You want a battery-powered radio and flashlight, a first-aid kit and extra keys,” she explained.
It’s also important to keep physical copies of information you might not even think of on a regular basis.
“If for some reason your cellphone’s not working and you need a phone number, do you have those key phone numbers written down somewhere?” she asked. “A lot of people don’t remember phone numbers anymore.”
Working out a plan with the members of your household is another important step.
“Where’s your family meeting if something happens and you have to evacuate your home? Who are you contacting?” she said.
Finally, it’s important to stay informed on emergency situations.
“Be aware of what our risks are. Here in Saskatchewan our biggest risks, of course, are weather risks,” Goulden-McLeod said.
