I can’t wait to re-rewatch the 1987 Canada Cup.
I remember the games vaguely as a kid but then was able to get my hands on some tapes 20 years ago. And then reading the book ‘Gretzky to Lemieux’ by former Regina Leader-Post sports writer Ed Willes added to what many argue was the best hockey ever played.
The Soviet Union against Canada with Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Gilmour, Gartner, Coffey and Bourque among the stars for Canada.
The Soviets countered with future NHLers Sergei Makarov, Igor Larionov, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Vladimir Krutov, Anatoli Semenov and Valeri Kamensky.
It was three straight 6-5 finals. Sorry for the spoiler. But it ended in one of the top Canadian goals of all time, as the aforementioned book title suggests, Gretzky to Lemieux.
It hits the air on Friday night. As far as an education for young hockey fans, I recommend watching these games.
For entertainment, I’ve already scheduled the PVR so this won’t be the last time I watch it.
