A Saskatoon police constable sustained minor injuries during an alleged altercation with a man wielding a machete Saturday morning.
In a release, Saskatoon police said they received a report of a man with a machete outside of a building on the 1800 block of 22nd Street West at around 5:20 a.m.
When officers arrived, there was a group of people outside. An officer attempted to take the man matching the suspect description into custody, but they attempted to bike away.
Following the attempt, the man allegedly moved into a “combative position,” the release stated.
As the constable tried to take the man into custody, a woman approached and began to interfere with the arrest.
During that time, the man allegedly reached into his waistband and began to pull the machete out. Additional officers arrived as a short physical altercation began, taking both the man and woman into custody.
The officer sustained minor cuts to his arms as a result.
Officers then allegedly found methamphetamine and several pieces of stolen mail in the man’s backpack.
A 25-year-old man has been charged with resisting arrest, possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, assaulting a police officer, breach of probation, seven counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and possession of methamphetamine.
A 22-year-old woman was charged with obstruction.
