Saskatoon kids won’t be sliding on shin guards or tightening their cleats to join organized soccer games this spring, as Saskatoon Youth Soccer announced the cancellation of their 2020 outdoor season this week.
The season is typically held in May and June, but the organization was left with little choice after the City of Saskatoon banned sport field rentals through to June 30.
“It was a very difficult and challenging decision,” said Amanda Probe, executive director of Saskatoon Youth Soccer.
“We were trying to delay as long as we could, hoping for better news from the health authority or the province.”
She noted the organization looked at the fact that gatherings of more than 10 people are still barred in Saskatchewan, and at the sentiment that group gatherings will still be slow to return in the province.
Families who registered for the season are now being communicated with and issued refunds.
Probe said she’s still hopeful Saskatoon Youth Soccer can run summer drop-in programs, which have been around for 13 years. The group is also still preparing for their fall and winter indoor seasons.
She added, it’s disappointing news for kids, but her own five-year-old child is taking the decision in stride.
“She’s endured the cancellation of gymnastics, swimming lessons, dance classes and kindergarten class. So this is just another thing,” Probe said.
“They’re pretty adaptable.”
Probe is encouraging kids to stay active through the COVID-19 pandemic, and to keep practicing their soccer skills in a safe environment.
“Take your soccer ball and practice in your backyard with your family.”
